TOGETHER WE STAND:
Tribute to Public Safety
Location: Dublin, CA
Client: City of Dublin
The finalist public art proposal was envisioned as a community space with multiple elements and layered with meaning. Surrounded by planting and accessed by pedestrian pathways, a circular plaza creates a public gathering space. Rising from the center of the plaza are two sculptural totem-like towers that serve as beacons to the new Public Safety Complex.
The geometry and symbolism of the two sculptures were inspired by the badges of Dublin’s Police Services and the Alameda County Fire Department. Similar in concept to the badge is the totem, a physical symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, lineage, or tribe. Each totemic sculpture is comprised of multiple replicated elements that are unique to each department’s badge—the seven points of the Police star, the four petals of the Fire Department emblem. The geometric elements are stacked and “folded” to form tall totems.
