Pages of Care Location: Spokane, WA Client: WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine Fabricator: Tresko Monument Crafted from granite stone, the sculpture evokes an open book which references learning, the transformative nature of education, and the long tradition and history of medicine. A bell-shaped “window” is carved through the center of the book, symbolizing the completion of milestones, such as the start of medical school, graduation, and the life-long dedication of being a physician. As the College of Medicine uses a community-based model of medical education, this “window” frames views of the larger world, reminding students of their connection to the community. During graduation ceremonies, a real bell is hung on the sculpture, rung by a representative of the graduating class. A circular fused glass insert represents the heart, symbolizing the radiance of compassion, care, and humanity that is at the emotional core of medicine. |
