MEMORIAL FOR DECEASED STUDENTS
Location: St. Paul, MN
Client: University of St. Thomas
Collaborator: Experience Glass (glass fabricator)
Four large stone panels intersect to form a cruciform. Expressing solidity and strength, the stone is intended to symbolize the earth and the corporeal body. The top of each panel angles upwards to create a sense of uplift. In contradistinction, two glass discs inset into the stone panels evoke an ephemeral lightness with their translucency. Their circular form symbolizes both the heart and the eternal soul. Both loss and renewal are made visible through with this void that captures light. The gradient of materials—from rough to smooth—creates a sense of revealing. Owing to its symmetrical form, the memorial can be viewed from all angles to similar effect. The glass discs, however, will capture light differently depending on the time of day and angle of the sun. Intended to engage people of all backgrounds and ages, the memorial design allows for multiple interpretations and understandings. It works on a physical tactile level, as well an emotional and metaphorical one. The memorial will allow people to contemplate life and loss, within a setting that evokes calm and peace.
