Abounding in Rushes

Location: Woodland, CA

Client: Yolo County
Fabricator: Michael Stutz

Yolo County is located in the Sacramento Valley area of California. Yolo comes from the Native American Patwin word “Yo-loy”, which means “place abounding in rushes", a reference to the land that was once covered with wetlands. The sculpture is inspired by Native tule-reed baskets, rendered in the shape of an acorn. The sculpture is “woven” from wave-like strips of steel that contain text expressing the Seven Values of the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation.

The inspiring words text are written in English, Patwin, and Spanish:
Family & Community, Weyeda Dihida, Familia y Comunidad
Respect, P'ele k'aisis leokas namihnwihnda dihiwihnda, Respeto
Accountability, Bopas, Responsabilidad
Integrity, Leok purru, Integridad
Communication, Leok t'ewe da p'ele sorru, Comunicación
Loyalty, Leok sani patwinmatihn, Lealtad
